So the Kettle Gallery decided to hold a photo contest, the subject was Deep Ellum, the rules were few, and the notice, at least my notice, was short. Having received a call from Hdweezy over at Slumberproject that this was a thing, we hatched a plan, coordinated our efforts, and set out to capture Deep Ellum in one image, though many were taken.

In an effort to improve our photography, many of us may buy a new piece of gear, or visit a new location, but, while those kinds things may give us the mental boost to get over the hump, what many, many pro photographers recommend over and over is to just keep shooting.
Initial impressions of the Pentax Q10: I like it, it's well made, takes a good picture, and is fun sized. A full review is planned, but for now, enjoy the pics.
-Stunch So, for some, flash is mandatory, and as a tool in a photographer's kit, it's indispensable, but what happens when it gets dark & you post up on a tripod, crank the iso waaay down, and let long exposure do it's thing? Well, this...
So I recently took a trip to the country, and while I did do some color shooting, my best work from the weekend was the black and white images I shot with the amazing Canon SL1. I you haven't yet shot in black and white, you have got to go out and give it a go.
Cellphones: The death of the point and shoot? Facilitator of the rise of awful photographs? Selfie generators? All these and more. Cellphones, or mobile phones to our friends across the pond, are a game changer to the photographic community. They represent a shift in the way our culture as a whole perceives the art and science of photography by putting a camera in the hands of pretty much everyone in the modern world, and letting the photos fly, from your hand to the internet in moments, for better or, often, for worse, at least in terms of quality. Their impact on photography may be larger than even the DSLR, and digital photography in general, and has already begun to change the way the industry operates, and what role professional photographers will play in the new photo soaked world we live in, but the cellphone has much to offer photographers who normally avoid it, as a medium of artistic expression, and as a tool to boost your career if you're a pro or aspiring amateur.
This is a bad picture. Elements of it may be useful in composite work, or for background fodder, but make no mistake, this is awful. So maybe you're new to photography, or struggling, or just looking at your work and saying "no, nothing here." Well take heart, everyone takes terrible pictures, some more than others, but everyone does it.
Just a few quick shots from the Community Nights Event from last weekend, tons of fun. These Images were shot with the amazingly underrated, Pentax K-x shooting at a lowly 12mp. My Pentax for the evening was very well used, and was strapped to a kit lens. The photos were lightly edited for color and contrast.
So after shooting with the J1 for a while, my feelings for it have only gotten warmer. It's been with me for some fun times and opportune moments, and I really ran it hard to see where it's limits were.
In the interest of framing this article, my regular camera is a Canon SL1, I've shot it with the kit lens, nifty fifty, L glass, and an old art lens, and at 18mp, it's no slouch in the resolution department. I have to admit, I was nervous about coming down from 18mp to 10mp for this cheap camera challenge, because I guess I've just seen so many cheap cameras with even somewhat high megapixel counts (12-14mp) still look pretty awful, but because megapixels only tell part of the imaging story, I figured I'd put that concept to the test. |
