In an effort to test the new (to me) Nikon 1 J1, Hdeezy from Slumberproject and his lady friend met up with me in the dead of night to put the J1's low light capabilities through the gauntlet. We decided to go to the local college proving grounds, an odd mixture of very dark, and very well lit areas, with trees, architecture, and a wide assortment of different light sources, which should be a fine test of noise control, dynamic range, and focusing.

Sometimes, we all struggle to stay hot, keeping those creative juices flowing, so one thing that works is to make a folder with your favorite images on it, and set it as a rotating desktop, mine switches every 10 minutes, but find what works for you. More later! -Stunch Sometimes, words just aren't enough, other times, it's just what we need. Some days, I'd just like a high five, and the knowledge that someone likes the photo, other times, I prefer cash. Today, I'm 50/50 :D
Ok, So Over at str8fresh.com, we, after much looking about, discovered that lots of people with great cars, cannot take great pictures of their cars (or simply lack the confidence to do so), and we find this very frustrating, so we are offering a photo course soon, and wanted to use an inexpensive camera to shoot it, so the students of this course will not be intimidated by not having a DSLR, or not knowing what a DSLR is (no, seriously). So after much research, I settled on the Nikon 1 J1 to be our flagship cheap camera and here's why:
Cost - Since Nikon released the Nikon 1 J4, the J1 Plummeted to basically free (under $200, which is, in camera money, like dollar menu tacos) Availability - Amazon, that pretty much sums that up, I mean, if you can read this, and have about 200 bux, you can get this camera RIGHT THIS SECOND Quality - It's a Nikon, so that's a good start, it's also made of aluminum and magnesium, so it's a sturdy little camera Interchangeable Lenses - Yes, this is an upgrade from a point and shoot, and the lens selection, while not as vast as micro 4/3rds, is more then enough if you want to expand beyond the kit lens, and with the adapter, it takes pretty much any Nikon glass, and retains centerpoint auto focus. Win. Image Quality - Despite being a somewhat small pixel count at a mere 10mp, it's got a clever bit of engineering behind it, and it really does take amazing, clear, colorful photos, in a wide variety of lighting situations Manual Mode - It's got it, and even though it IS buried in the menu system, and left off of the selector wheel (oddly), it still does the job, and works well on this camera. Last but not least: Staggering Video Quality - Seriously, it's a great camera, but the video this puts out is insane, it's more like a camcorder in this regard, and it's got manual video control as well. And slow-mo. And super slow-mo. And can do jump cut length 4k. After testing one out, shooting some shots, taking some video, and generally getting a feel for it, this was an easy choice, and I am excited to getting started on the course. Check back for updates on the camera, and the course itself, and please go check out www.str8fresh.com Image samples coming soon, Lord willing. |
