So after shooting with the J1 for a while, my feelings for it have only gotten warmer. It's been with me for some fun times and opportune moments, and I really ran it hard to see where it's limits were.
In the interest of framing this article, my regular camera is a Canon SL1, I've shot it with the kit lens, nifty fifty, L glass, and an old art lens, and at 18mp, it's no slouch in the resolution department. I have to admit, I was nervous about coming down from 18mp to 10mp for this cheap camera challenge, because I guess I've just seen so many cheap cameras with even somewhat high megapixel counts (12-14mp) still look pretty awful, but because megapixels only tell part of the imaging story, I figured I'd put that concept to the test.

Ok, So Over at str8fresh.com, we, after much looking about, discovered that lots of people with great cars, cannot take great pictures of their cars (or simply lack the confidence to do so), and we find this very frustrating, so we are offering a photo course soon, and wanted to use an inexpensive camera to shoot it, so the students of this course will not be intimidated by not having a DSLR, or not knowing what a DSLR is (no, seriously). So after much research, I settled on the Nikon 1 J1 to be our flagship cheap camera and here's why:
Cost - Since Nikon released the Nikon 1 J4, the J1 Plummeted to basically free (under $200, which is, in camera money, like dollar menu tacos) Availability - Amazon, that pretty much sums that up, I mean, if you can read this, and have about 200 bux, you can get this camera RIGHT THIS SECOND Quality - It's a Nikon, so that's a good start, it's also made of aluminum and magnesium, so it's a sturdy little camera Interchangeable Lenses - Yes, this is an upgrade from a point and shoot, and the lens selection, while not as vast as micro 4/3rds, is more then enough if you want to expand beyond the kit lens, and with the adapter, it takes pretty much any Nikon glass, and retains centerpoint auto focus. Win. Image Quality - Despite being a somewhat small pixel count at a mere 10mp, it's got a clever bit of engineering behind it, and it really does take amazing, clear, colorful photos, in a wide variety of lighting situations Manual Mode - It's got it, and even though it IS buried in the menu system, and left off of the selector wheel (oddly), it still does the job, and works well on this camera. Last but not least: Staggering Video Quality - Seriously, it's a great camera, but the video this puts out is insane, it's more like a camcorder in this regard, and it's got manual video control as well. And slow-mo. And super slow-mo. And can do jump cut length 4k. After testing one out, shooting some shots, taking some video, and generally getting a feel for it, this was an easy choice, and I am excited to getting started on the course. Check back for updates on the camera, and the course itself, and please go check out www.str8fresh.com Image samples coming soon, Lord willing. |
